United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation- SOURCES AND EFFECTS OF IONIZING RADIATION United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation UNSCEAR 2000 Report to the General Assembly, with Scientific Annexes UNITED NATIONS New York, 2000 VOLUME II: EFFECTS.
Risk estimates for the induction of human disease are obtainedprimarilyfrom epidemiological studies.Thesestudies can clearly distinguish radiation effects onlyat relatively high doses and dose rates. Togain information at lowdoses and low dose rates, which are more relevant totypical human radiation exposures, it is necessary to extrapolate the results of these studies. To be valid, this extrapolation requires a detailed understanding of the mechanisms by which radiation induces cancer and genetic disorders.
